Moderation is one of the ways Careerforce maintains a consistent high quality level of assessment. Successful moderation ensures decisions made by all assessors are consistent.

Careerforce specifies a range of unit standards for moderation each year as shown in our five year moderation plan.

All Careerforce assessors are required to participate in moderation.

Peer moderation

Our workshops give assessors from throughout Aotearoa the chance to compare and critique each other’s assessment skills through peer moderation.

Peer moderation provides an opportunity for assessors to check that their decisions are in line with those of other assessors nationwide. It also gives assessors the chance to generate new ideas, learn about different approaches to assessment and work through any issues.

Each assessor brings three pieces of work to be reviewed. This process provides a venue to discuss and observe best practice. It also helps to ensure that all assessors are performing their role at the same high standard.

Appealing moderation decisions

Any organisation or individual with consent to assess may lodge an appeal against a moderation decision or process.

The first step is to seek a negotiated solution with the National Moderator.

If informal negotiation cannot resolve the issue then a written appeal should be lodged with Careerforce’s Manager, Products and Marketing. This appeal should include all relevant documentation and be lodged within 20 working days from when the final decision of the informal negotiation is communicated. The appeal will be investigated by Careerforce as soon as practicable and a decision reached within 20 working days of receipt of the appeal.

If resolution is not achieved, the CEO of Careerforce will make a final determination and decision for all parties.
